My Father Was A Big Influence
Marybeth Nelson: "My father was a big influence."
How does one become interested in history? What leads a person to decide to extend their interest in history on into the distant future? For Marybeth it all began with her family. Her father who, after serving in World War I in 1918, (stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco), ventured out into a series of travels (including visiting an uncle who was prospecting for gold near Eureka, CA.) The stories, included the perils of driving the old one lane highway along the coast north of San Francisco, captivated his young daughter.
Then it was a junior high social studies teacher whose enthusiastic tales of the early settlers in Iowa caught Marybeth's imagination. College only added momentum to her love of history.
It was her exposure to the great historic places preserved by the Minnesota Historical Society, and the wonderful library resources provided by the History Center in Saint Paul that confirmed the historical imagination kindled in her childhood and youth. There she found resources equal to her special interests in genealogy and Norwegian history.
Not surprisingly, Marybeth concludes: "So when I began thinking about what organizations I would want to support with a planned gift the Minnesota Historical Society had to be one of them!"
