In Giving You Receive
It is said that in the act of giving we receive. Most of us experience the reality of this truism through the eyes of a child, the gratitude of a life changed, or through the vision that is inherent in the spirit of philanthropy.
Robert Maynard has been a member of the Society since 1991 and is an avid reader of history. He believes that an appreciation for and an understanding of the past is important to shaping the future. "History ties us to our roots. It is important to remember the sacrifices and accomplishments that our predecessors made in bringing us to where we are today. In challenging times, it is easy to forget the values that have shaped our nation."
Bob was born in New Jersey in 1922; and, as a member of the "Greatest Generation", proudly serving in the Office of Strategic Services in China, and as Major General "Wild" Bill Donovan's temporary aide while the General was in China in the summer of 1945 developing plans to rescue Allied Prisoners of War. Following the war, Bob graduated from Princeton (1946) and Harvard Law School (1949) and worked in Boston until moving to Minnesota in 1976 to join Honeywell Corporation as Vice President and General Counsel. He retired in 1985 as Senior Vice President of Legal Affairs.
Earlier this year Bob established a charitable gift annuity with the Society. His gift will be used to create the Robert W. Maynard Fund - an endowed fund that will provide unrestricted support for Society programs in perpetuity. As he states, "The charitable gift annuity is a wonderful way to support the organizations one cares about. In exchange for a gift, donors receive a charitable tax deduction and guaranteed income for life. The charitable gift annuity is especially attractive for older members who wish to support the Society."
